The problem, of course, is the same as the reason the working water pump was removed. They are usually replaced during timing belt replacement because getting the timing belt off is 90% of the labor of replacing the water pump. Leaving an old pump in is gambling (although some people do, as is their right) but putting an old one in is crazy.
