Do I have a Series 2.5 XJ6??

Hi there! Just brought home my new toy-'79 XJ6. Can't seem to figure out what series it is...build date is 08/78, has vertical chrome slats on the grille, and door handles stick out...I think I'm in the "crossover" period.. Any thoughts or sure ways to tell? Thanks!!

Welcome to the world of Series Two XJ6's. I doubt it is a 2.5 :-), Jaguar did not build those. Have a look at the engine block where the exhaust manifold is. There will be a number like "4.2" which is the most common. There were 2.8's in the Series ones, but I don't think they were built as Series Two's. The only engines I know of in that series were 3.4 and

4.2.

He's not talking about engine size, Ron. He's talking about model designation. ie Were there a number of cars produced which fall in-between series 2 and 3, with some of the characteristics of both.?

Personally, I don't think so. Whilst the series 2 evolved throughout its life, with frequent minor trim changes - some of which would have carried over to the series 3 - I don't think it ever got to the point where it could be called a '2.5'. The series 3 has a completely different look; in particular, a different roof line. If your car doesn't have recessed door handles and black bumpers, Eric, it's a series 2. The series 3 was introduced on the 28th March 1979, but that doesn't mean that series 2 cars weren't still being sold by dealers after that date.

830847103&n98038677 The chances are that a previous owner fitted a different grille at some time.

I recall working on a T reg series 2 when it was a couple of years old and some minor parts - fuel filter, brackets, etc were series 3 items. If it was one of the last series 2 built then various series 3 components could have already been in the racks beside the production line.

Happens down under a fair bit. They use moulded body bumpers on SII's and stick the SIII Grill in the front and SIII tail lights on the rear, to fill the gaps.

Kind of strange...vertical grille, handles stick out, bumpers are black/chrome- I'm pretty sure it's as David described: parts being phased in for the Series III, and getting a combination of the different styles during the build. I know there's no official "Series 2.5" but that's the best way to describe the "twilight zone" cars...or I could say "Early '79".. Either way, the car is a lot of fun, and I'm taking my first 200 mi. trip in it on Tues!! (fingers crossed) Thanks for all your help, everyone!
