dodgy fans

This may not be related....but...

I recently got rid of a ford mondeo (uk version of a us contour I think) and bought a jag X-Type (hence me being here)

However my mondeo had exactly the same fault as yours and it's quite simple to fix. The fan speed is controlled via a resistor pack and when that fails (as they often do on the ford) the fan only works when the pack is bypassed (full speed) or on the first setting as the fan is actually off then.

I replaced the pack and it was fine....the fault was also intermitant

I had this problem too. On mine, the switch - which operates when you turn the fan control - was broken.

Unfortunately, you'll probaby need a new unit (unless you want to solder a new switch on!)

Do the lights on the ac control panal light up every time you turn the unit on? If the lights are off when the fans don't run, it's the micro switch at the rear of the unit. They cost $1.99 at radio shack. A15 min fix. You don't need a new unit. If the unit only runs on high is a bad darlington transister or a bad relay. They are inside the fan box under the dash. You have 2 fans, one on each side. Give a little more info please. Jim

Does this mean not at all on the other speed settings?

Sounds like a faulty selector switch. But lets not stop there - the previous replies are both correct.

RECOMMENDATION:

I would first locate and inspect the resistor board and look for cracked solder joints and obvious damage. If all looks well then I would take a OHM meter and measure across the resistors to verify that they are not open and within the specified resistance. Replace bad components or entire unit if needed.

From there I would recheck your switch operation and replace the controller if needed.

the extra info that has been requested. everything works i.e. the lights on control panel light and i can hear the flaps moving when i press the screen button. It seems to be that the fans arent blowing. i have had the back off and squirted the switch, but to no avail! i think the switch my work cos the lights come on and befor they failed completly they would sometimes work on other settings other than high.
