Valve Guide Stakedown Kit

Hi, I'm planning on buying a seriese 3 XJ or Daimler 4.2 and am a little confused about Valve Seat Stakedown kits. Are these required on UK cars? I only seem to have seen reference to them on US sites. Is this problem something that has been known about long enough that a previous owner is likely to have sorted it? Does this need to be done by a Jaguar specialist, or would anyone who deals with alloy heads regularly and has the necessary equipment be able to do this?

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I'm a newbie and trying to catch up. Any other advice also appreciated. Thanks, Andy

Thanks Richard, I'n not planning on racing or anything so I suppose it's not as vital as I thought to have them installed. At least if there's not much to it I can have them installed if it seems necesary later on... Andy

Usually only required in the USA where emission control modifications increase the heat load on the engine and the likelihood of a problem.

Cool, thanks, so if I'm running a UK car on Premium Unleaded I should be OK then... (I've bought an '83 Sovereign...).

Andy,

See if you can get "lead replacement" liquid at your service station. I usually add a little of that as well :-)

Ron, I have a tin catalyst (Fuelstar) in the fuel line of my Mark 2 and it runs very sweetly on Premium; 24mpg and bags of low rev torque. Any comments on these? GrahamL

Neither the stakedown kit nor lead replacement (octane booster) are required in any Jaguar engine for the purpose of protection of the valves.

The Jaguar engine Has used hardened valve seats since its inception.

The stakedown kits may be a good thing in an automobile that is being raced, but there is no problem of valve guides coming loose on a properly built engine being used on public motorways. Richard H. Kuschel "I canna change the law of physics."-----Scotty

Must have better petrol in your area :-)

Many a XK motor has dropped a valve down here on our shitty fuel.

Graham, I've not had anything to do with fuelstar, but Les Hughes swears by it :-)
