89 XJ erratic temp.

SO I recently went through the captive bottle-cap cap-bottle tango several times with many over-heatings until I got a Cap-bottle combo that actually worked. I tightened all the hoses and I now operate okay EXCEPT when I first start the temp gets all the way up-to @ 230-240 at which point it drops to @180 then stays at 200-210 whilst in motion. When I come to a stop the temp climbs slowly to 220 but never gets any higher then drops as before when in motion again. Before this it used to be always be 210 regardless of what I was doing... I need to get a smog and I'm worried about the high temp, does anyone have any experience or thoughts on this, thanks.

Usually when I see a gauge acting like that, there is an air bubble in the system. This allows steam to spike the temp sender until the thermostat opens.

Your symptoms could also indicate a fan clutch going bad sort of, but that for sure won't cause the first thing cold started spike, only a rise in temp when the vehicle idles or runs slow at operating temperature.
