93 Cherokee Emergency brake lever

This evening the release button and the spring underneath it popped off the end of the emergency brake lever. Problem is, it popped off as I was setting the brake. Now, I don't have a way to release the brake!

The brake is set and I am more-or-less stuck. Fortunately, it happened at the top of the driveway. My question: is there a way to release the emergency brake without using the brake lever? As I look into the space where the button should be located, I see a metal rod, but it is flush inside the housing where the button used to be located. I did try pressing the rod with the tip of a screwdriver, but it does not move.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

There should be an threaded coupler where the main cable splits off to the right and left side.

Back the nut off until the brakes are released.

If you send an e-mail I can forward the lever removal instructions.

flydog did pass the time by typing:

If you can get back to the ass end of that handle there is a pawl that catches. Just release the pawl and you can release the brake.

That's pretty challenging without removing the center console. I don't know how to do that yet... but I will....

I believe you will have to lift up on the handle lever before you try pushing in on that bar. That bar will be held solid by the pressure on the cables.

Other than that you can go under and 'try' to take apart the cable setup connection just in front of the back wheels. 'If' you can loosen it, it would make it easier to pull up on the handle to push that rod in. That cable adjustment is usually rusted up solid though. It is only used when installing new cables so it seizes up.

I was able to back the nut off and relieve the tension. The car now is drivable. Next job is to replace the lever.
