Confused 98 TJ Shift-Light / White Valve Stems

Hello,

I took my 98 TJ apart the other day, thinking I had a leaky exhaust manifold, (turned out not to be the case) and It's all back together now, but I noticed something strange while driving it the next few days.

My "UPSHIFT" light is coming on when I'm in 5th gear.

Has anyone else had this "inconvenience" before? It's the least of my worries, but seems strange, since all I did electrically was disconnect the battery for a few days, and unplug and re-plug all the intake manifold sensors..

Also, while I had the intake & exhause manifold off, I noticed that all my exhaust valve stems are white, while all the intake are nice and shiny still. Is this normal? Or is it a symptom of the engine running too lean or something? Any explanation or help would be great.

I can't help you with the shift light, but the white on the valve stems is normal cumbustion deposits. It also means that you aren't sending any oil out the exhaust ports which means your rings and valve stem seals are in good shape.

That is the 'this side up' light.... ;-)

Seriously though, if it has changed how it works, you likely have a vacuum line wrong or loose somewhere.

:) I do need a reminder every now and again, the way I drive sometimes..

I'll have to check all the intake manifold connections, but I figured that the computer would be smart enough to realize that I'm in 5th, and never turn the light on regardless of what the vacuum is, (and/or whatever other parameters it looks at when deciding when to turn the light on.)

But, there I go again assuming a computer is smart, :) .. I know something has changed, as it never did this before I fooled around under the hood..

Thanks for the responses guys.
