detecting gas line leak

I have a '87 jeep Cherokee...manual 4.0 engine..live in Az and it won't pass the EPA test here...there is a very minor leak in the gas line somewhere...no visible leaking...no loss of fuel...no smell of gas...but when the EPA pressure tested the gas line from the cap...there was a small drop in pressure.

What's the best way to try and find the leak...?...no "visable signs anywhere...EPA suggested probably a corrosion leak...but how can I find it.

Can I get a pressure gage/tester thing somewhere that I can pressurize the system myself...and then check for leaks physically...soap bubbles..etc. Have a good compressor with pretty accurate pressure controls so as to not over pressurize the system.

Thanks, Tim

Up here they pressurize the 'cap' only on the Cherokee.

They weren't pressurizing the 'fuel' lines, but the vent lines. That don't work well on a 4.0 Cherokee.

I checked in my book and the Cherokee will only hold 3 PSI on the gas tank, then it vents to the charcoal canister.

It has an 'active' charcoal canister with a metered .050 orifice on the fuel tank vent line. The canister purges with a ported vacuum line to the air filter area with no switching.

This makes it totally impossible for the tank to hold pressure above 3 PSI!

Other than that, I have heard of a smoke generator being used to fill the system for leak tests.

What EPA test? Is this something just for Phoenix or Maricopa County? It sure isn't state wide.

It still sounds like the place is trying to sucker the OP.

Just did a Google search. The emissions testing is just for Phoenix (Area A) and Tuscon (Area B). And if you are registered in Phoenix the Tuscon test is no good and vice versa. I'm glad I live in Apache County!
