Why? It takes ten minutes at idle for the tstat to open.

CRWLR did pass the time by typing:
Prolly because that is with a water filled jacket in the engine. Without a radiator the engine drains and empty airspace doesn't do diddly for cooling the engine.

That may be true, but there is no problem to move a car 30 feet in a minute or two.
