Tub Cracking, repair options?

92 YJ.

There is cracking where the bolts for the drivers seat pass through the tub directly under the seat riser. I'm no welder, but even I know that if one could wirefeed the tub without melting holes in such thin sheet metal, it would simply stress crack right next to the welds over time. Other than this, the tub is rust free and in excellent shape. I thought of puching out the two bolts that are attached to the seat riser and using 4 longer bolts and some long pieces of flat iron to create some type of stress relief bracket to relieve the stress on the cracked area.

What do you think?

Thanks, Brian

Brian, I looked under my 1995 and the holes in question are either right next to or inside some rather beefy channel reinforcements. You can weld metal that thin, but IMHO the preferred method is a lap weld. I would look into getting some fender washers. In the bolt size you are talking about, they would be 2" to 3" in diameter. If the cracks are small, you could glue them to the floor, top and bottom, using Liquid Nails and call it good, or you could weld or braze them in place. Underneath they would have to be trimmed to clear the channels. Brazing has good strength for a repair like this, and won't do crazy things to the temper of the metal. Torch welding is also a possibility. The restoration shops like to use hammer welding. I haven't tried it.

The 1995 Wrangler has a galvanized tub. I don't know about the 1992. Welding this stuff generates fumes that aren't good for you.

Hope this helps.
