XJ ABS

Hi My 1993 4ltr RHD XJ Cherokee has just failed its annual safety inspection because the ABS dash light doesn't come on and then extinguish when the key is turned on. It is off all the time. The ABS relay in the PDC clicks at ign on and the fuses are ok I checked the fault code and got a number of 55 which I think indicates end of codes. Any ideas what the problem is? could it be just a blown bulb?, a friend in the car business says that is unlikely Thanks Barry

Since ABS is not mandated by any state or the federal government, how can they fail your vehicle because the ABS light doesn't go on? Aferall, the ABS light wouldn't go on then off when the key is turned on if your XJ didn't have ABS.

Barry did pass the time by typing:

The bulb will always come on when you start even if there is a system fault (apart from the ABS computer being dead). That's to test the bulb.

If you have the schematics you could tap the lamp feed and see if it is getting power. I suspect you have a blown bulb.

The only RHD XJ in the U.S. is a postal Jeep. Barry (according to the IP) is in England where they have probably some annoying vehicle laws. :)

I thought the 'check gauges' key feature had to work even in the US?

Lots of folks have posted about failing because they didn't bother to hook up a 'check engine' light with the aftermarket fuel injections.

Same deal, nothing legally says they have to have FI, but...

Either the brakes work on the testing machine or they don't. I don't think there is a requirement that the bulb works for an MOT test.

FWIW, not in Canada. Out of Service criteria stipulates:

L/R signals visible from the rear of the vehicle. (This can also mean side mounted signals on a bobtail unit). At least one brake light visible from xx? metres. At least one rear running light visible from xx? metres. At least one headlight.

You may be fined at the discretion of the TEO, but not considered "out of service".

Well, I took the dash to bits and found there is no bulb or bulb holder for the ABS light so I guess it was removed to cover up a fault, I have had the car for about 3 months. In the UK if a system is fitted it must work and the Tester says the light is part of that system. Might have to find another tester.

Just a silly thought, but are you sure you have ABS?

Well, the '93 didn't have the Bedix system, and the new system disables itself if there is a fault, but the brakes work normally if the ABS is disabled, as you've been told many many times.

Those sockets can break and fall out. IIRC it's just a twist style connector. May as well replace it and find out if that's the problem.
