Had some problems with my 01 Sportage 4WD engaging during the first snow. It would engage sporadically, sometimes with a loud click. The problem turned out to be cracked vacuum hoses (both sides) where the hose connects to the hub.
The problem was diagnosed by connecting a vacuum gauge inline then turning the wheel. The vacuum dropped to zero.
