101 beat series boys 3-2

This weekend I have spent about 8 hours on the motorway in my S3 and saw three 101's; a fire tender, radio body and a 101 converted to mini bus sort of thing.

I think given the number of s3 vs 101 on the road it was a good show by the

101 drivers.

It has to be said though, there was also a s2/3 station wagon towing a large caravan along a steep section of the M74, very ambitious!

3-3 if I include myself.

Given that the 101 was the fastest leaf sprung production Land Rover, sounds like they were in their element on the M'way!

The fastest leaf sprung LR is a gun tractor!

Found the "mini bus sort of thing." it was the Isle of Sky walking holidays

101 as pictured at billing.

What about the SIII Stage1 v8? It must weigh less than a 101, so should go faster.

Maybe, although 'brochure' performance needs a bucket of salt to hand. Certainly I've read reports about prototype FC101s going over 80mph.

Data from LRO data guide shows:

Stage1 V8: 91bhp @ 3500rpm, 166 lb ft @ 2000 rpm, 85mph FC101 V8: 135bhp @ 4750rpm, 205 lb ft @ 2000 rpm, 78mph

Not much in it really!

Was this body conversion done by the same outfit who did the camper bodies as my reg is KYC 853N?

Does anyone have any info about the concealed side steps for the side door as I'd love to get my hands on something like that?

I assume that the roof rack/ladder is a custom jobby?

This will be one of the last pictures of mine before it undergoes some cosmetic changes :-)

My god, are you sure about that? my 2.6 develops nearly as much as the stage 1 v8

I think i almost touched 60 at one point with mine, and i was pretty much touching the pedal stop at that!

I seem to regularily hit the floor when trying to make my 101 move. Should I infact have more go than this?

Perhaps i should get it tuned properly as soon as I sort out the overheating!, it can't be too bad now though as i got down to billing on less than £25 of petrol (for a ~120mile journey), which was nice!

Warren's touch has definitely improved matters, from a painful struggle to the mid-50s to absolutely roaring to 60, at which point I've always stopped. With SU's and a dual-point Mallory dizzy going on this Saturday it should be even better (fingers crossed). Next consideration is whether to go for power steering (only needed at low speeds) or a gearbox upgrade. It would be much better as an auto, and the current manually is very hard to go down the gears in.

Incidentally, my speedo is uncannily accurate (overreads by about 2 mph from 40 through to 60). Are they all this good?

I wondered that when I saw it. Drop them an email, they're a nice bunch.

Whooo... Hows about a test run to my favorite RUPP afterwards then?

Yep - do it.

My take on this is simple. I like the manual because, erm, it's manual. Off road I like to have total control of the revs and gears - I know many will say an auto is even better off-road for the same reason, but I'm not convinced. The Detroit locker will be going in pretty soon too :-)

Quite simply, NO. I've never known two 101 (or any Landie) speedo's to be the same.

The speedo on my camper is very accurate against a GPS. The GS one less so (but the Unimog wheels and tyres could have something to do with that :-)) The GS is also significantly faster than the camper. Is it possible to see whether restrictors are fitted without removing the carbs?

Sure - lead the way. I'll try to keep up, but my ickle 3.5 might struggle in your wake! Of course, if Warren can't fix the power loss problem you'd need all 250 horses to drag me home...

As the truck is mainly for road use I'm very tempted. I think the baby seat conversion may actually be more important, but I can't do that until the whole carb / engine cover situation is finally resolved. It looks like the Weber conversion has fallen through, so once the SU's are happy I can start designing some ironmongery (and a test rig to go with it).

By the time I've had the gearbox reconditioned I'll be halfway to the cost of an auto. The diff lock is not working, so I could kill several birds with an auto box and Borg-Warner transfer case with viscous coupling. All a matter of dosh, and probably not for this year!

I did want to convert to a MPH speedo, but with this one being so spot on I'm a bit reluctant.

On or around Wed, 23 Jul 2003 21:53:07 +0100, Tim Hobbs enlightened us thusly:

definitely recommend the ZF plus BW transfer box ex- Ragne-Rover, never regretted putting same in my 110. Plus you have the added bonus of being able to drive along eating sarnies and swigging pop and the like without worrying that you'll have to find a hand to change gear with...

luck, I should think :-)

heard a Range Rover with a very nice-sounding 'zorst today in town. Must get around to removing some of the silencing from mine. wonder what it'd sound like without the centre (big) box, and just the small back one...

I'm tempted by power steering too. Im knackered by the time ive managed to manouver the 101 in/out of the drive!

Is there any point putting in a 5spd gearbox instead of the 4?... I mean ive not really felt that it needs a 5th yet!.

I'm only asking as there is a 5 speed RR gearbox sitting in my mates parents drive which has no home! :)

Didn't the 101 have restrictor plates as well, originally?

Hmm.

62 BHP, 103 lb ft @ 1750rpm However, this is for the 7.0:1 engine, the 7.8:1 will produce more, I don't have the data for the later engine, but it certainly feels like it has more than 103 lb ft of torque.

If you can make it fit...

I opted for the high ratio transfer gears, but you could also fit an overdrive I guess - or both :-)

Hmmm. I was naively assuming it was going to be the same size :), will have to measure up!

The 101 gbox is the same as an early RR one isnt it? The 5 spd RR gearbox i can get is from an early 80's RR. They can't have changed the dimensions of the boxes that much in 10 years or so.. can they?

How fast would grumble go/cruise? (when you had a 3.5 v8 in).

I'd really like to get a bit more speed out of my 101, as it wasnt that much fun going down the motorway at 45!

Reply to
Tom Woods

Well, I had 75 with ease.

I reckon the best - and cheapest option would be to go for the high ration transfer gears. 120 odd quid and an hour to fit.

LEGS still have them.

I _knew_ someone would ask that...

Dunno what this means in reality ;-)
