Very interesting piece that Steve thanks for sharing. Derek

Just curious, what makes you think the piston rings are knackered? And IMHO I think you would be better off with a 2.25 rather than a NA 2.5 so long as it was 5 bearing.

It isn't any of the top end gaskets, they have been changed. There is no evidence of a crack in the block. It's burning oil like there is no tomorrow, there is no power at all, and there is a clanging noise. The valves are fine, as is the timing. I haven't had the sump off, but I can't think of any other way that oil could be getting into the cylinders, that would also explain the disastrous loss of power.

And I paid for a 2.5, so I want one! AIUI there is a little bit better top end speed on the 2.5 (it's got to be better than 40 mph, at any rate).

You didn't say if the gaskets were replaced whilst investigating these problems or if it is actually burning oil or just smoking heavily or if the injection pump timing is fine along with the valve timing or if there was any appreciable wear or marks in the bores etc. Does it make any difference if you have slacken the injector pipes in turn to maybe ascertain which cylinder the noise is coming from? I just can't see why there should be oil in all the cylinders. Is the 'clanging' noise due to a broken piston, trying to compress the oil in the bores or just an injector stuck open. Is there actually diesel in the tank? Restricted air inlet? Dodgy breather system? Tappets not set right? Too many unknowns here to venture an opinion.

I'm not surprised.

AIUI there is a little bit better

It would be alright with a 200 Tdi shoved in it.

My commiserations, it is a shame, I hope your New Year improves.

Looks good, an designed well for its (urban?) target market. I wonder if you can get a couple of goats and a crate of chickens in the back? And how tough it is, it needs 2CV type toughness. Nancy computer control for every function either, though I guess it will have to have some form of computerised engine management to get the emmisions low enough.
