OT: - PC PSU's

Not work related ;-)Master D senior and myself are in the middle of building a PC, we have ventured in to the unknown and bought a motherboard, Have thrown in a odd P4 3000 ghz chip I had laying around and 2 new memory boards. All was going swimmingly well then I found the PSU from the donor machine / case has a 4 pin PSU / Motherboard lead and we need an 8 pin one..... typical!I have just looked at my local suppliers PSU's and whilst I can find ones obviously having 8 Pins they go on to have a range of wattages which is reflected in price. Trying to keep sensible what sort of size PSU am I likely to need?Lee D

You can get 'em that fit in place of an ordinary lightswitch.

interesting results with one of the computers. The computer, up and running with windows XP pro SP2, pulls about 118W. switching on the 19" monitor (CRT) makes a spike of about 400W and then settles to about 188W.

now for the interesting bit: opening windows on the machine seems to cost about 4 or 5W per window. Pausing the processing on Seti at home doesn't appear to reduce the power consumption, not, at least, in the immediate sense.

So nowt really new, shut the windows or it'll cost a fortune if you leave them open, doing so also compromises your security..... no wonder they called them windows :-)

I wonder when Microsoft will release Barndoor.

I'm currently nursing both Vista 64 bit and openSUSE 10.3 which are both new to me.

I had XP pro 64 on this machine, but gave up on it and went back to 32 - nothing I wanted to run was 64 bit software and several 32 bit things flatly refused to install on 64.

Yeah a few items like that here too. Nero 6.0 summat for instance won't play ball and the only hints I find involve the transfer of money.

The openSUSE won't recognise either of 2 wireless card I've tried which makes it crap. I may pull it off and bung on XP as an alternative OS.

Frankly, right now, I'd go with XP pro 32 bit, unless you specifically need

64 bit for something. I'd also not touch any flavour of Vista with someone else's barge-pole. If I do need 64 bit, I've got XP pro 64 corporate, but like I say, currently not worth it, 32 runs more stuff and seems not to have any problems with dual-processors.

Mind, I see the top-scorers in the SETIathome thing are all running Darwin, in various versions, on 8-processor machines!
