Best colour.

Hiya!

Thinking of getting a new car, what colour would be best (Bearing in mind I'm not too bothered myself)

Here's my thoughts....

Black, Looks nice, but a bugger to polish, shows all white polish and seems to show scratches nicely

Red, Fades very quickly needing repeated, regular maintenance,

Silver, Ewwww, too common.

White, Bit boring really.

Blue, Nice, but has to be a deep blue, none of this 'hairdresser colour'. Never owned a blue. Any opinions?

Yellow. Eeeeekkkk. OK if it's a RUF.

British Racing Green. Nice, if it's a 70's Rover, where has that colour gone?

Gold. Damn, Reminds me of my Dad's old Austin Princess

There really isn't anything I like. Anyone think it's actually possible to 'invent' a new colour?. Surely there must be. And why are all tyres black?. Why not the same colour as the car. It may look kak, but why hasn't it took off?

Shall I get my coat?

====================== Why not buy Doki's Harlequin and fit a set of whitewall tyres?

Green, definitely. Only Persons of Taste drive cars with that colour, i.e., myself.

I was going to mention the Harlequin, but thought I wouldnt for those not following the thread. Personally I just dont 'get' those sort of cars. Each to their own I suppose!

Whitewall tyres eh. Hmm, very American. Perhaps I could also gain 900 'pounds', eat bagels and chew tobacco. ;)

Thanks for the effort :D

Good thing brown didn't get a mention, for in another survey, this time from Australia, brown had the highest car crash/accident rate, silver the least. (Distortion from unequal sample sizes has been, it was claimed, statistically eliminated).

I had a metallic red Citroen AX - still looked great after 10 years, modern reds don't fade

Silver looks good - but yes too common.

Trouble is, how do you sort cause from effect? Do boy-racers gravitate towards black cars and push up the accident rate, or are they inherantly less safe? Or more likely, a mixture of both.

Red, white silver and blue are just so common nowdays. I hadn't quite realised how ubiquitous they were until I chanced to look at a local carpark on Google maps the other day.

Go for yellow and stand out from the crowd!

Are you sure it isn't your choice of car that's the problem?

Matt ( snipped-for-privacy@blueyonder.co.uk) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

What car is it?

Some cars look good in certain colours, others look s**te.

I've always wanted a fluorescent orange car - like a DynoRod van. Trouble is they fade so fast.

I would avoid Green. For some reason I don't think people "see" green cars. They think it is a bush or tree or something and never see you coming! No end of times where people have just turned in front of me without seeing me when I've driven green cars. Someone in the office has also mentioned this too so it is not just me.

I've never had that problem with my motor. 200k miles...

Perhaps it's selective blindness on people's part? El cheapo green motor; instantly forgettable. OTOH, high end motor like mine...

The local sparrows etc round here seem to see green cars as bushes alas. Since purchasing a bog standard silver one (the last two were Humber Sage Green and Volvo Green !) I wash a damn sight less bird crap off it, and its nothing to do with hosepipe bans.

You could have something there. I drive an Aqua Frost Ford Fiesta and last year whilst overtaking a lady on the dual carriageway she turned across in front of me to use an opening in the central reservation to turn back down the other way. I was doing 55 when I took the back end out of her car! Said she didn't see me.

I like dark green for most cars. Red only works for small cars and Ferraris (and it doesn't fade if you wax it every few months). Another colour that works for most cars is a very dark red (burgundy).

I agree with you on silver and white, although for some reason estate cars often look best in silver. The two nightmare colours for resale are "hearing aid beige" and "varicose vein blue" which is inexplicably making a comeback on Micras.

Tyres contain carbon black. Black goes with anything. Kia were still using whitewalls a few years ago, though :-O
