How do electric coolant heaters work? I understand that they are connected to the bottom radiator hose and that the hot coolant rises by convection into the engine but doesn't there need to be circulation for this to happen? You are only going to use these when it is cold outside, so in those circumstances, wouldn't the thermostat be closed, blocking the loop? I'm sure I'm missing something, but can't think what.
