Door scrape - how much to repair?

SWMBO's arrived home with a parking ding in one of the doors of our Zafira; a bollard just *leaped* out at her apparently.

So we have a couple of shallow, but deeper-than-paint, side-by-side gouges into the door each about 4" long. Metallic paint. I'm assuming it's not going to be worth involving insurance companies, and so was going to hawk it round some local body shops. But could anyone hazard a guess as to what it's likely to cost to put right, as I really haven't a clue.

Thanks David

Matching metallics is difficult, and most bodyshops will prefer to spray the whole side to match it.

When some pillock pulled out into the side of my father-in-law's Peugeot and smashed both doors the insurance wrote the car off. We bought it back as I had a spare set of doors and I fitted them. My neighbour at the time was a professional car painter and he sprayed the car side for £100 cash. But bear in mind this was my neighbour and that I did the body repair. I suspect you'll be lucky to get it down to £300.

================== Almost nothing to do with original post - but......

How did you manage to buy the written-off car from the Insurance company? Did they offer or did you ask?

I ask because I'm in a very similar position. My car was hit a few days ago and the insurance company has suggested writing it off if it's beyond economic repair. I would like to keep the car as it's in rather good condition but estimates for repair are almost as much as the market value of the car. Any suggestions for dealing with the insurance company?

Thanks for that. ( :-( Well, at least thanks for replying anyway!)

I had an own-fault shunt at a junction some years ago, in a car with a book value of about 600 quid I suppose. Damage was pretty trivial beyond a busted headlamp, but insurance company-funded repair estimate of about 1200 quid swiftly brought about it being written off. Instead I took the car to a local body shop of my choice for a 'budget' repair (or some such words) and got a quote for abou 400. I went back to the insurers with this and they agreed to fund it; the resulting repair was as good as new as far as I could ever tell. Basically involved some skilful panel-beating and body-filling etc rather than simply shelling out for about three brand-new body panels and bumpers etc. Quite an eye-opener to me.

Depends on the insurance company. Father-in-law was lucky enough to have an excellent policy; they said the car was worth £500 and sent a cheque for that much. We just said we didn't want to write the car off, they said we could keep it. It just got Cat C damage recorded on the DVLA computer. However I sold the car last year (after father-in-law passed away) with no problems.
