"Car makers will be forced to cut carbon dioxide emissions produced by new cars under fresh rules outlined today by the European commission. The new rules, which car makers have warned will increase the price of new vehicles and could threaten jobs in Europe, will require manufacturers to reduce CO2 emissions to an average of 130g/km by

2012.

Despite the existence of voluntary targets set below that level, the current average across Europe is 163g/km, while in the UK new cars are emitting an average of 167.2g/km."

should i keep this in mind when choosing a new car for this or next year? or would this law apply to only cars sold in 2012 onwards?

thx

If they can retrospectively reduce your emissions then yes, be very concerned. Otherwise it obviously only applies to new build. Of course it makes more sense to reduce your emissions anyway from an environmental viewpoint.

And note that it says "average". There are already many vehicles which come well within the future rules.

Brian ( snipped-for-privacy@tesco.net) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

Indeed.

Is that manufacturer average, or industry?

If it's manufacturer average, is it by brand or by parent company?

Presumably it's volume-weighted, so 10 x 120g/km cars "cancel out" 1 x

230g/km car produced?

Could this be why Porsche are wriggling around with upping their stake in the rest of VAG they don't already own?
