Fiesta ISCV

Hi Guys

My sister's 1997 Fiesta 1.3 stalls often when coming to a halt. Otherwise it starts and runs pretty well. First thought is the idle speed control valve. Can anyone describe to me where it is, what it looks like, and anything else to check?

Also, any idea of cost to check/clean/change it?

Thanks Chris

first checks should be general servicing, then air leaks

Any likely things for the leaks? Is the SPI unit on a rubber mount, or are we just looking for hoses?

If it's any indicator, it's just passed the MOT emissions check.

Checking it? If you do it, free.

Cleaning it? With the right stuff, free.

Changing it, around £100 or so.

You just need to remove the valve, making sure you keep the 8-shaped seal, clean it out with petrol or similar, then replace.

has a picture of the Ka's idle control valve. The Fiesta one looks similar. Although actually this page has a picture too,

- I took that when I decided to check it, but it was pretty clean.

get a spray can of carb cleaner and spray it over anything and everything on the inlet side, including sensors, gasket faces, any hoses etc.

IIRC these are not rubber mounted

the iscv is the bit that faces you mounted left to right on the intake lump (slightly to the left of the oil filler cap, secured with two bolts, and it is roughly tubular.

I've just picked one up for my 2001 Focus 1.6 today from a Ford main dealer, it cost 45 quid and a few pennies. I can't imagine the Fiesta would cost much more than that. My local mechanic wanted £110 to supply and fit, which is pricey considering it's a 5 minute job even for a novice home mechanic.

Don't bother cleaning it unless you need to buy some time financially- it will only screw up again soon. I was tempted to clean out mine but the random stalling at roundabouts and junctions changed my mind- it can be rather dangerous and I'd rather not take chances with a flaky old component! My car has 60K on the clock which is a common time for the ISCV to clap out apparently.

Yes, the 40 - 60K point is common. Ours was very clean at the 80K point, though. I have long suspected that it's oil vapours and suchlike that clogs it up, changing the Ka's oil every 5,000 miles did seem to do the trick.

Same thing here- mine was bone dry and clean, not a trace of gunk or oil. I suppose it must have just wore out due to old age. Even the original silicone figure-of-eight seal was in perfect condition and didn't require replacing.
