Intermittent cold-start gurgling noise

Hi,

Recently, I can occasionally hear a gurgling/trickling sound in the heater/dash area of my mk3 astra, but only after a cold start. The sound disappears after about 30s and is never there during normal driving. The engine starts and idles perfectly from cold. I can drive for up to 600 miles over a few days before hearing this sound again. Cabin heat is normal and temperature gauge is always steady at usual value. There is no pressure in coolant expansion tank when opened an hour after driving, and there is no coolant loss. Thermostat was changed 8000 miles ago. Recently had a full service including coolant change. Problem persists but still very intermittant. Gurgling seems more likely to occur after car sits idle for over a day, but not always. There is no 'mayo' in oil or oil cap and coolant looks clean, so I hope I can rule out head gasket? What else might cause this?

Thanks, John.

Get an 'over coolant gas test' done, your symptoms are head gasket, the only way to rule it out is by test, not observation. (HG is very common on this vehicle too)
