Any views on the reliability and residuals of the new Vectra After battling with rear brake and handbrake problems on a 2001 Mondeo I am thinking of giving up the fight and changing cars Can get a good deal on a nearly new SRi Vectra I know the old Vectra was rather poor Any views on the new one welcome Thanks Geoff

I work in the trade and have had three 3 month stints with 3 new shape Vectra SRis. I am probably not the best person to discuss residuals or reliability because I dont keep cars long enough to know but I can pass some comments about the vehicles.

Two of mine were 2.2 SRis and I found the engine extremely smooth and refined. The other was the 2.0 Turbo, which was slightly less refined but a good deal quicker. The turbo pipe popped off a couple of times though, which was annoying.

I found the Vectra SRis to be an excellent compromise between ride comfort and performance and a huge improvement from the old shape in every respect. Now I am out of Vectras for a while I really miss the little extras like cruise control, steering wheel mounted stereo controls, auto wipers and the electro-chromatic rear view mirror that stops you getting dazzled.

The trip computer is handy as well and told me that the 2.2 SRis were averaging about 32MPG and the 2.0 Turbo SRI about 30MPG.

Between the two engines, I would probably be happy to loose a little economy and refinement for the extra speed for the 2.0 Turbo, its

6-speed gearbox and extra chrome exhaust.

My next car will be a Honda Accord 2.0 Sport and I am interesting to see how it compares with the Vectra.
