Some questions sprung to mind immediately on the experiments:
1) This was a report of a report. An official statement/report from Mobil, the manufacturer, would be more acceptable. 2) The Mobil 1 used then was 'pure' synthetic. Since the Castrol case, no more. 3) It would have been more illuminating if Mobil 1 was swapped out with a regular premium petroleum oil, and switched back, repeated at regular intervals, i.e. on the same car. The rates of metal wear (from used oil analysis) over the (accumulative) periods of either oil are then compared. 4) Pity it wasn't reported what engine oil was used in the rolling machine(s) deployed in the 8-year grilling 24/7 experiments?! :)
The official reports on exxonmbils website. Switching oils would seen odd, you'd normally just run 2 engines.
lol..sometimes i just add oil additives.instead of changing the oil. if i add a oil additive at 3300 miles i'm good for another 2000miles.lol

Oil can and is analysed to see how it has stood up to use. It's a man made substance - not some miracle plant extract. Decent synthetic oils can last for over 30,000 miles with no deterioration under the right circumstances.

There is a problem with this reasoning. The reality is that we do not know how long one specific engine will last; we may have a rough idea of the ball park but pinpointing it down in terms of a numerical value in the future is not possible, and talking of changing this value by a mere adjustment of the OCI is hot wash.
It's like not being able to tell from the appearance whether a specific piece of pork chop is cooked thoroughly or not, and we definitely do not want any raw pork meat for fear of possible parasites, we continue to heat the chop for a period of time arbitrarily chosen knowing that that will be overcooked if not burnt. We overtreat when we don't know.
This is the same in OCI, we have to overdo it when we have no means of knowing when the engine will giving up the ghost. If a 3000-mile change is called for, so be it.

However the cost of the consequences is relevant. Engines are cheap even if the 3000 mile intervals reduced the failure significantly, as they reduce the failure rate almost insignificantly they're expensive. Liver flukes are a right bugger compared with overdone pork chop.
