Soppy Saab

A friend of mine owns a 2000 Saab 9-3 2.0t, but the problem is that of late, the 't' has stood for torqueless.

I drove it and it feels as if the turbo isn't boosting as it's gutless at all revs and just doesn't want to move at all.

There is an engine management light flagged but I can't find any information on retrieving the codes without getting it hooked up via the DLC.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this beast to be so gutless, or at least how to access the codes stored in the PCM.

It revs to the redline, so there doesn't appear to be any sort of limiter in place.

If the MIL is lit, then chances are it in LOS mode. Now it should still present some boost over 2000rpm. If there was a severe problem, revs would be limited to around 3500rpm, which doesnt seem to be the case.

I would carry out a preliminary check of all intake hoses looking for splits and disconnections, check the turbo is free to spin, and that as far as you can see the wastegate is not stuck open.

Otherwise there is no option than to have the codes read to point you in the right direction.

You may have a blocked cat / exhaust, but I would a) expect very low rev pre-turbo performance to be fine, and b) it not to rev to the redline as it became more asphixiated as the turbo started to blow. Is still possible though.

Tim (remove obvious) ( snipped-for-privacy@NObtinternetSPAM.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

That's both the easiest to check and the most likely, I'd reckon.

It is just possible that you have a random glitch in the engine management system or sensors that it responds to. In addition to the suggestions of the other replies, I would try taking out the fuse for the ECU for 20 seconds or so. On my car, this resets it to default values.
