Vauxhall SRI V6 did 105 in 3rd gear!!!

Some guy at work claims that when he booted his Vectra SRI V6 (02 plate) motor this weekend, he was doing 105 mph and when he looked down, he was still in 3rd gear!! Surely he jests? Shit, do run of the mill quickish cars do 105 in third?

I didn't for a second believe him.

The Vectra's are very high-geared for improved fuel consumption.

Doesn't do much for the in-gear acceleration mind :)

Yes it is quite possible, v6's accelerate seemingly forever in 3rd it's the main overtaking gear. And 2.5 v6's arn't run of the mill to be fair.

My Omega will do 120 before it changes up in to top being an auto. Love kicking it down at 100, it just keeps pulling.

To be fair, I think Vectra V6s are really much too common to be anything other than run of the mill.

Going back a bit, someone I know had a Cavimalier GSI2000. 110 in 3rd apparently.

The V70 T5 i drove hit an indicated 108/109 ish in 3rd gear quite happily. An you can *just* about use it from a standing start with a modicum of clutch slip.

To be fair, they are.

It's just a cooking model Vectra - they aren't quick.

Excessively high gearing isn't something to boast about !

Yes, if they've got stupid gearing.

For rather large values of "modicum" :-)

Kawasaki ZX10R does 105 in first at the limiter according to the bike mags!

OK, had to try it today. My V6 2.5 Omega will do 80 in 2nd redlining.

120 in 3rd redlining 0-60 8.1secs. Top end 145, who do I send the repair bills too LOL.

1989 200SX 1809cc 4 cylinder turbo, 99mph redline in 3rd. 133 redline in 4th. Needs some bits changing to make them redline in top at 165ish but there are some around fitted with long ratio gearboxes that go faster still. Tell the guy at work with the V6 if he sees one GET OUT OF THE WAY! JDM market it was called 180SX and some live up to the name. Don't think anyone has had 200mph out of one yet but it's an obvious target. Poor Yanks got it as 240SX, bit of a challenge that. Slightly bigger challenge than getting a Lotus V8 turbo to do 200mph.

Automatics are geared way taller than manuals. On most autos 3rd is top and 4th is an overdrive.

I think the ZX10R is the first to crack the ton in first but the others aren't far behind. BGF.
