Speedo accuracy observations

The message from Howard Neil contains these words:

A-roads mostly - things like the A49 and so on.

That blows my theory re road repairs out of the water. I believe that most of the A49 is in the North Wales police area. Given their Chief Constable's interest in speed enforcement, I wonder if they are part of an experiment? I tend to keep clear of A roads (I am in West Wales where there are not many of them anyway) but I will look out for these crosses.

I live in hope that they may be ritualistic voodoo signs, intent on bringing about the rapid disappearance of said idiot^H^H^HChief Constable.

That makes it look like a possible combination of my two theories. How about, they mark the spots where sensors are to be installed in the road surface?

Well, given the loony activities of Brunstrom and the North Wales Taliban, anything's possible. Perhaps they're actually the locations of anti-speeding car mines, designed to blow up the car as it speeds over ?

My 1996 Mondeo Ghia X has both a normal analogue speedo, and an 'average speed' function built into the trip computer (digital)

If I'm doing 30mph exactly on the analogue speedo, at the point that I hit the reset on the average speed, the trip computer's digital display will read 28mph.

I'm I'm doing (cough!) 100mph exactly on the speedo, the trip computer will indicate a speed of 93mph at the point that I press .

It seems that the analogue speedo does indeed over-read by around 8% on this car. Tests with a 'marked mile' (the circular yellow / red signs at 0.25 mile intervals) confirm this.

Anyone else find the same thing?

the kangoo I sued to drive would say I had travelled 90 iles in an hour, when I hadn't passed the 75 mph top speed of the van :) so there is always a discrepancy somewhere along the lines :)
