Tachometer Fault ZX 1.4i

The rev counter on our ZX 1.4i has started to become erratic in operation. On start up it sometimes rises to about 3000 rpm and stays there. The needle fluctuates slightly up and down but only by a few mm.

I have managed to restore normal operation on occasion by blipping the throttle to high revs and back to tickover, but this trick has stopped working.

Can anyone tell me please where does the rev counter receive its' signal from, and is the fault likely to be at the dial head or the source? Is there anything that can become sticky or worn? Haynes is remarkably vague about the whole issue!

Thanks.

As far as I'm aware modern tachos receive their signal electronically from the ignition circuitry. What causes an erratic reading such as yours, though, I don't know. Not very helpful.

I can vaguely remember a simular fault which turned out to be a bad earth on the engine. I think the temp gauge was doing funny stuff too. Check the main battery earth to the engine and any other earth wires on the enging block.
