Vauxhall Zafira

The V reg. Vectra's done about 120,000 now, looking for replacement soon, this followed three Cavaliers. Was considering something different, anyone have any view on the Zafira, about 04 - 05 models, 1.8 petrol, are there any particuler faults to look out for on these? The Vectra has been good, normal servicing plus one cam sensor, I would expect Zafira to be similar. Scenic is similar of course, but not keen on French cars. Any advice most welcome, thank you.

Are Zafiras thirsty? The Vectra does about 35 average around town, up to 48 mpg on a run, not bad I think for a fairly heavy motor. Would a diesel Zafira be a better buy, for annual mileage about

15,000? I know little of diesels, never owned one, and TBH, I dont really like them!

The ones from my local hire firm cost me more for fuel for the same run than a SWB transit. YMMV, it might be worth hiring one & seeing what you get, but I'm always unpleasantly suprised by them getting nowhere near the official figures, unlike everything else I hire.

They're a very good MPV - engine is proven, as economical as anything else in the same bracket. Obviously, it's not a sports car, and it won't be as nice to drive as the Vectra (there's a sentence you won't hear very often...). If you have several kids, it makes sense, if you have 2 kids and don't need 7 seats, get a family car/estate car.

Yeah, I've hired Vectras and got that sort of mileage. But my Zafira (2001

1.8 Ecotech) does high twenties in town and rarely above about 33-35 on a run, which I think is a bit disappointing - could be the relatively low gearing though - 20mph/1,000 revs in 5th gear, while from memory I think the Vectra is higher geared.

Mine was; 22mpg average when I traded it in, but it *was* the GSi (2.0 turbo, 200PS)...

That said, the seating was nice and flexible; we occasionally used it with six seats which left a reasonable amount of boot space, and it made a handy 'van' with the middle row slid forward and the rear seats down, when we needed to haul stuff.

The height advantage over e.g. a Vectra is handy if you've got young toddlers though, when you're hefting them in and out of their seats.

But if you've got older kids then get a family car. You not fancy the new shape Vectra? I've got a '07 1.9CDTi (150PS) Elite hatch now and (knowing it's not going to be a point-to-point country lane weapon) it's been hard to fault so far. Seats are comfy (heated was nice in the cold weather!), Satnav is accurate but it doesn't rotate like Tom Tom, climate control works well, comfortable on log runs. For added comfort my father in law reckons it could have done with 16" wheels with higher profile tyres, but since I've just come out of a Zafira GSi I've not noticed ;)

Thankyou for the replies, all useful, I reckon I may well look out for a 2 / 3-year-old Vectra, I dont really need an MPV, just fancied a change. Might break a habit and buy a Diesel!

I've got an 03 2 litre Diesel Zaf. We get about 37 mpg around town and up to about 40 on mixed motoring. Best mileage is on hilly A roads, where we can get in excess of 45 mpg.

The downside is the cost of oil and the frequency of oil changes.
