VW T3/25 camper van

Hey

Has anyone got experiance of these, what they are generally like to live with?

Guy is swopping his, for my bimmer, hes off to Berlin a couple of weeks to drive it back.

Hes sent me a load of pics, has reciepts saying a big overhaul was done 3 years ago, its not long ago passed its TUEV.

Not sure what engine it is, i know its a petrol, got the round lights, so acc to wikipedia its a 80-85

It seems quite easy to get it transferd here to UK legal, just make sure it has fog lights, and change the headlights. but as im planning on moving over permantly in about 10 months...i wouldnt mind not doing that, and just get insurance etc etc. TUEV is a higher standard than a MOT

Are they a pretty reliable thing and what sort of economy can i expect? its a LHD etc but that doesnt bother me.

Anyone had one of these and offer advice?

not looking forward from going from a 2.5 down to a little farty thing, but it will do me fine even though now i cant do 130+ down the autobanh anymore! ta

That could be anything to be honest. Engines in that timespan include

1.6 aircooled - gutless, avoid!, 2.0 aircooled and 1.9 watercooled.

I have one, but haven't really had it long enough to tell you loads about it. Best places to look are here:

Both sites have useful owner's forums.

Economy probably won't be much different - it does depend on whether it's high-top, pop-top or tin-top, but it's the speed you'll miss most -

70 is about flat out. Handling too, it's basically an old van so it handles like one. Having said that, they're pleasant enough to drive - I've moved from a Merc estate, though I have other cars as daily drivers anyway. I needed the extra loadspace of the camper and the extra sleeping space for New Year and holidays now daughter has a steady BF!

I've been averaging 15mpg from the 1.9 but that was running a little rich. (That has a later 5 speed box)

Check all the panel joins as they tend to rust there (like most vehicles).

I can nudge 83mph in 5th on my GPS where the law permits but that's a bit scary.

thanks, i went to the local GSF place and asked them, and price for the UK spec lights etc etc. guy said there was getting more demand for the campers over here and more n more German ones appearing, not too cheap too.

Hoping to get it mid Jan. cheers

I think the increase in popularity is a follow-on from the popularity of the T1/T2 - they are getting to silly money for a good one, and the T25 is bigger and more practical, while retaining essentially the same engines.

As regards clubs, the links in the previous message are the two main ones that specialise in the T25, though there are many more generic VW clubs.

thanks, hope the deal comes off in a couple of weeks and he still drives it back from Berlin for me..

its got the plastic raised roof for beds, and myself having driven back from Berlin, with a square box for a roof rack, i know its very slow trip...but if he sits behind a big lorry, mps goes up!
