Zorst repair stuff

What's the bestest stuff for patching holes in a rusty silencer these days? Is there anything permanent and hard as rock available yet? Something that sticks like poo to a duvet? Some sort of mesh would be good, followed by something uber sticky.

Suggestions on a keyboard please.

"New silencer" not possible.

Last one I did, I used a tin of gun gum, a piece of that metal mesh you use for giving bodywork repairs some "strength", an empty cat food tin and some steel wire. That was 2 yrs ago on my mum's Jimny. Remarkably, It's still on :-)

I suppose you could chemical metal or something like that

A tin! Of course! I was wondering where I could get some thin steel because the the silencer's not flat so it would need to be formed to the shape. Reckon a bean tin can be MIG welded to a rusty exhaust silencer? Hmmm...

Good suggestion, that chap. Thanks.

High temperature silicone seems to be the exhaust sealer these days - I'd guess it could be used to stick on a patch.

Well reminded. When I heard that high temp.silicone could be used to repair exhausts it did sound a bit unlikely, but it's enormously sticky and could just do the job in this case.

Thanks Dave.

A new silencer or a mig welder and a plate of steel.

I did explain that a new silencer isn't possible (availibility more than expense), and a plate of steel would have to be formed to the shape of the silencer...

Done now with silicon and an aluminium sheet anyway, we'll see how long it lasts.

Couple of Jubilee clips too, I hope?

I'm in the process of looking for some larger-than-jubbly metal straps to keep things in place. I dare say something from a shed will be adapted as I can't bear traipsing round shops looking for something that nobody sells :)

At the size you want they're called sign clamps, or plumbers merchants sell it as banding kits for air handling.

You can connect Jubilee clips together to make longer ones.

A wire coat hanger, wrapped round, twist the ends together, stronger and cheaper than a jubilee clip.

There you go - I knew someone'd come along with a suitable solution. Well done that Mrcheerful.
