Smart Car basis for Flying Car?

The small and light, yet reasonably roadworthy Smart Car would seem to be ideal as the auto component of a practical car-plane. The auto half has always been the weak half of the equation particulary in recent years due to emissions and crash standards. Only minimal alterations in weight reduction need to be made to the Smart to adapt it for flight.

I envision something resembling the ConVairCar being developed for licensed pilots, possibly as a cooperative effort with a Japanese company for the aerodynamic component. M-B does not have the foresight to undertake a project of this magnitude, though it would salvage the Smart and create an industrial showpiece beyond compare.

M-B is smarter than to do this to their Dumb car. Just imagine the air crashes with all the little planes that have highway damage.

No, it wouldn't.

The most cost effective flying car is a big old Caddy inside a C-123 or the twin engine C-130 type the Europeans use.
