Dead 'phone in SLK

My 2001 SLK came with the Voice Activated telephone/radio/cd system including a Motorola Timeport telephone. I dropped the 'phone the other day and now it's microphone no longer works. I can still use the Voice Activated system so the problem is clearly with the telephone itself. The 'phone is out of warranty so now I have a number of questions:

  1. Will any Timeport 'phone work in the system or is the Mercedes 'phone specially programmed to work in the car.

  1. Is there another telephone available that will work in my car?

  2. If there is another compatable telephone is there an adapter that will let me plug that telephone into the existing Timeport connection in the car?

  1. If there is not an adapter, is there any reason I can't cut off the male plug in the car and replace it with a compatable male plug for the new telephone?

  2. Would it be more practical to send the original 'phone to Motorola for repairs?

  1. Would it be smarter to buy a Porsche?

I've asked my dealer's Service Manager and he was uncertain about every question I asked... except the last.

Any suggestions?

Thanks/Carter

Dickhead Even if it was under warranty, it wouldn't be covered because you dropped the bloody thing-why even mention warranty? Just send it for repair or get a new one-why make life so hard for everyone else and yourself.

Yes, why should anyone buying an $80,000 car expect a custom phone included with it to survive dropping it from your hand, like any other decent cell phone? Why is he making things "so hard" for everyone else? Unless the phone had obvious external damage, I would have no problem putting in for a warranty claim. But then I don't go around calling people vulgar names on newsgroups either.

As for buying a Porsche, that's what I did and avoided all these problems, because it is doesn't have all the spiffy communication gear, electronic info display panels, etc.

Dickhead?

That response seems uncalled for. These are serious questions I am asking and I was hoping for assistance, not abuse, from the members of this group.

Your comments are not in keeping with the customary open exchange of information usually found in this group and I am greatly disappointed in your behavior.

Fortunately, the other members of the group are more forthcoming and I look forward to continued, appropriate, communication with them.

Mr. Braxton,

That's what I call a classy response to an oafish comment. The contrast between exemplary restraint and Klaus' outburst represent the best and worst of the posts in this group.

I urge you to continue - even in the face of provocation - to contribute to the former.

Thank you Deji

Thanks too to other members of the group who referred me to e-bay options. What Klaus apparently failed to grasp was that the current line of available Motorola telephones are not compatable with my SLK and that replacement Timeports are no longer available through either my Mercedes dealer or local cell 'phone outlets. I had not thought of e-bay but have found several units there that will work.

By the way, cell 'phones ARE covered by the basic warranty but not by the extended warranty.
