My 1993 mitsubishi expo had been burning oil so I thought I'd try replacing the valve stem seals. This is a 16 valve 2.4 L straight
4--the same engine as some Galants. Fast-forward a couple months, and the seals have been replaced. I had to remove the head to do it because I couldn't keep pressure in a couple of the compression chambers. I had hoped it was due to a worn headgasket, but a couple of cylinders proved to show some slop. At that point, I said eff it, reassembled the engine and tried to start it.It starts and runs briefly, but there is a noticeable high-pitched whine coming from (I think) the back part of the top of the engine. The whine seems to increase in pitch when the engine is revved. When the engine is stopped plumes of smoke arise from the engine compartment. The latter may be caused by a large amount of oil that had dripped onto the exaust during my dismantling efforts.
I didn't use a special tool to set the valve stem seals; they seemed to slide and set in place fairly easily by hand. Was this a mistake?
Could the whine be explained by an intake or exaust manifold leak? Could that explain why the engine dies? I welcome any advice or criticism.
