CV boot...

How bad does a CV boot need to go to w/o being replaced? My gf has a

1986 Galant, and has had a peristent, steady but slightly growing in intensity, loud thumping sound coming from the front left wheel. Two months ago someone at PepBoys said the CV boot needed replaced (then the sound only happened when she turned), but now the sound happens when driving straight (intermitent at that). Two months ago I told her to have it replaced, but evidently hair/nails/etc were more important, and I am afraid if she drives the car much longer, the freakin wheel will fall off possibly injuring her and/or someone innocent bystander(s).

1) Can a layman replace the boot? Layman meaning someone who can change oil, filters, brake pads, starters/alternators, etc. Or are professional tools found in shops needed?

2) Whats an approximate price we can expect? I am hoping 200-300 bucks.

3) What else could be damanged (on the car) if she doesnt get it replaced)?

Any answers (posted or emailed) would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Its not the boot per se, more the VC joint inside it. If the boot is torn or split, the CV is worn out. Get a quote (other than from Pepboys) on supply and fitting of a rebuilt axle.

Just in case, I suppose you have checked the wheel nuts are tight?

It's too late now. Not only is the boot finished, but so is the CV joint. It now need either to have the CV joint rebuilt and a new boot put on, or have a new or rebuilt shaft put in. Better have the other boots checked as well to make sure thy are in good shape.

Sometimes it's just cheaper to replace the whole axle. That sound means the joint is toast. Time to replace it. The boot keeps the dirt out and grease in. Because the boot ripped, the grease came out thus ruining your CV joint. Someone who knows what they are doing can do this in an hour.

You can get the whole half shaft from Advance Auto Parts for around $70. All you have to do is find someone to install it for you or do it yourself.

Good luck,

I would replace the half shaft itself and not worry about any hidden wear & tear that has occurred. You can get one at Autozone with a liftime warranty for like $60 (with core exchange). It takes about an hour or so if you haven't done one before, they aren't to difficult to do..

If the boot was taken care of quicker, like right away, you could've gotten away with a quickie boot, which basically is cut in half, then glued on, which you can do yourself, however they do not have a good track record for longetivity.
