OT(ish) - Auction Report - not fleabay.

Just out of interest I floated myself off to one of the local Car Auctions tonight.

Well, interest and looking for a nice, TD Mondeo for someone.

Nothing much going on at the auctions, but a few cars I thought you lot might have been interested in. If I'd been there just looking for something to make a quick few hundred quid on, I'd have definately bought the following;

91 'H' Saab 9000 Turbo 2.3 Carlsson, black, all the nice bits, very clean indeed, leather, manual, 112000 miles, 2 previous owners, sounded very healthy, pretty much faultless - £250.00

99 'T' Rover 620Ti, 57000 "warranted" miles, 1 owner from new, full Rover history, direct from MG Rover main agent, very very clean indeed but also incredibly white, black half leather, a/c, appeared to be unmarked inside and out - £1200.

99 'T' Alfa 156 1.8 TS manual, that trendy blue colour, full Momo leather, 83000 miles, company owned, FARSH, for some reason on steel wheels but with the bodykit / boot spoiler etc - £2150

98 'S' Alfa 156 2.0 Seleshite, graphite grey, Recaro leather, 74000 miles, 1 previous owner, AR service history, recent gearbox - £1950

90 'G' Toyota Supra 3.0 Turbo, white, looked clean, sounded healthy, black leather, 11 months mot, 1 month tax - £575

'S' Mondeo TD, 42000 miles estate in that bloody horrible purple they seem to paint poverty model Kas in £1500

2001 'Y' Ka 2, red, colour coded bumpers etc, looked cared for, 44000 miles, 12 months mot £1625

'51' Fiat Punto 1.2 5 door, scruffy, finance repo job, £1550..

'Y' Fiat Punto 1.2 3 door, clean and tidy, £1650

'X' Ford Galaxy 2.0 GLX, 112000 miles, engine smoking like Ivor the Engine, knocking it's head off £1325

'W' Skoda Octavia TDi, yellow, ex cab, mint but 300000 miles, £575.

Wow, fooking hell, snipped out the cars, but something for everyone at=20 peanuts prices. I would have snapped that 9000 Carly up. About =A31500 is= =20 the going rate for a 2.3. Not as smooth as the Aero, more brutal in=20 power delivery, but not as good BHP or MPG.

Don't like white ones, but if that Supra was a manual, that would be one=20 I couldn't resist. And that Octavia, as long as it had history upto=20 date, the starship miles shouldn't be a problem and Skoda yellow is=20 fairly attractive (as long as it is the bright one, not the pastel one).=20 Might do someone who needs a car for short journeys for short periods.

Would you be prepared to divulge the location of this Auction please.

I was very, very tempted. Was a case of "but if I buy this, I might not be able to get the car I came for"

I think it was a manual, it was Irish plated, but otherwise seemed perfect. Usual trade in type stuff.

Was Blackpool Taxi Yellow, with a trace of "Radio Cars - Blackpool" on the front doors, but looked seriously immaculate. Had full history and "one owner", but how many drivers I couldn't say.

Mannheim in Haydock.

Hmm, will do some looking up if I get room for a project toy or trackday car.

Sounds like the place to find bargains, especially coming upto Xmas where nobody has much spare lolly arround.

White, Irish plate, auction. And still £575. Wow. Supras are still worth something. Personally, I'd avoid a Supra at auction unless I had an exhaust gas testing kit for the coolant ;)

FWIW, if anyone wants a cheap Supra in Norwich, one of the blokes on mkiiisupra.net is being sent on some RAF thing on Friday and wants £500 for his black non-turbo one, MOTd, new tyres, nice Mk IV alloys, head gasket done very recently. (He has others, but he wants cash before he goes).

I'm beginning to wish I had given more thought to the series 3 manual=20 turbo in red that I briefly looked at. advertised for =A31800 but=20 genuinley good bodily condition and room to manouvre.

Owner said no headgasket probs, aircon worked, cruise worked, had good=20 leather, new tyres, new stainless exhaust some boost raise, but history=20 was missing so I never rang back. Wished I had now.

Well, the GT4 is getting 22mpg ATM, and I haven't done anything to boost yet.

LOL - recent gearbox. So that's a ballpark figure for how long they last then :-)

My brother's got a 147 2.0 Selespeed as a company car (53 reg) - think it's got around 20-25k on it at the moment, and he seems to like the gearbox, and reckons that a few magazines he's reeled off in a list have rated it as well, despite the fact that I tell him it's shit and that autos shouldn't feel like a badly driven manual.

I forget exactly what it was, but there was a very minor problem with the gearbox, that has only happened once or twice, but I can't see it lasting all that long. Maybe selespeeds are the new CVTs in the reliability stakes!

That sounds like quite a lot to me, suppose it's probably easily worth £2-2.5k with the low miles (if it's genuine).

I'd have been bloody tempted by that at that price. Very bloody tempted.

Do you know if they definitely sold at those prices?

The Rover 600Ti... I'd definitely had a sniff round that, at that price; enough leeway in it to budget for several diffs and head gaskets at that price.

Good report. I went to one just after Xmas. Highlights were a black MR2 Turbo like Vamp's but with leather & alcantara, and a black GT Four

Both those toyotas went for just over a grand each, the trade were well wary of them. I think the GT four was an import tho (obviously the mr2 was)

Another highlight was a 6 month old BMW 525td Sport with 90k on the clock (Was a Manchester Airport car). Still went for £15k though.

Another highlight was the black Yaris that went for £3k below forecourt value - the auctioneer commented that because it was Xmas prices were very low.

The one I went to was

Yep, I've only stated "no reserve, to be sold on the day" auctions.

Not the only one, was mint, but unfortunately white.

Just don't go "Ebay fever", if you bid, you buy, and I'e seen some seriously silly relics get auctioned for stupid money.

It can be worth going for if the seller has made any of the following claims:

"drives like new" "mechanically perfect" "absolutely pristine/immaculate inside and out"

Very easy to get out of, or at least have a valid reason for knocking the price down a decent amount, if something is wrong.

Ok, cheers.

The bottom really has dropped out the market, overall.

Oh dear... really not a good colour for one of those, and one wonders why anyone other than the police or a mini cab firm would want to order a new one in it.

The Mk2 Astra GTE looked good in white, as did the Series 1 Escort RS Turbo.

RS2000 and Capri looked quite nice in white (if kept clean).
