'95 sway bar

I have a friend that asked me about his sway bar on his '95 cobra. He said he was going around a tight onramp turns an started to "crab-walk". he felt the backend trying to step out. He pulled over and found the his rear sway bar had broke. He is asking if the stock sway bar is a good choice to replace it with, or is there something better that he could use?

I don't own one, so I could be talking aout of turn hear. But I've heard of that from more than one owner. I don't know how prevelant it is, but your friend is apparently not the first. I would replace it with aftermarket, front and rear matched set.

Steeda sells a replacement bar that is pretty good for about $130. It is a one piece setup rather than the welded ends. It is supposed to be as stiff as the cobra sway bar.

Yep, I broke my swaybar taking off from stop light a couple of years back. They tend to break at the ends.

mine was replaced with a Steeda as the other guys recommended to you. No problems with it so far.

I have been through a couple of bars on our 97 coupe. The rear sway bars on the SN95 will usually brake at the rear mounting hole on the passenger side. IMO the Steeda bar isn't any better as they have the same inherited weak spot right at the rear mounting hole. I am currently in the process of working on a rearend mounted bar with the end links going to the subframe. The original setup the way it was designed from Ford is horrible !!! All of the stress is placed right at the rear mounting hole in hard cornering and eventually the fatigue takes its toll.

Unbelieveably funny. I just bought a 97 cobra and after two weeks, the rear sway bar broke - at the rear bolt hole on the passenger side. I wonder if one could weld some extra 1/2" by 1" stock to the area under the stock bolt holes for extra reinforcement. Done properly and with some quality steel, it should make some improvement, no?

FYI; Replacement bar for the 97 cobra cost me 130 from Ford... I am try>>From: "Joe Cilinceon"

My '97 Cobra snapped its swaybar too... same deal, crabwalking across an empty parking lot (just playing around).

I put a 1983 GT swaybar on it... doesn't ride quite as good, but hasn't broken yet... it already had 160k on it and it still lasted longer under that car than the stocker did.

Plus, it's better than nothing...

Hmmmm... will an older sway bar like that fit my GT?

Yup. Anything from a Fox-chassis car with the same length rear will physically bolt up. Could probably use one from a V6 Fairmount. Whether or not it's stiff enough to do its job properly is another story. I took a V8 bar and it's still probably a little too soft considering it was an '83 GT (actually a Capri 5.0 RS) bar.

Remember Mike, the platform is still essentially the same as a '78 Fairmount, and you can bet that if they didn't have to redesign the wheel, they didn't.

Ah.. cool. I didn't know if any components would get in the way... like exhaust components or something. I'll see if I can find a Fox-chassis car rear sway bar then... I couldn't find one at all for my 98 GT at the salvage yard. I plan on GW subframe connectors too, so hopefully they'll help prevent breakage.

LOL... yeah, I suppose you're right on that. Thanks, JS.
