New Challenger price gouging
Want one of the first Challenger SRT8s? Be prepared to pay a premium...
If you're a Mopar guy and can't wait for a new 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 then you better refinance the house or skip junior's next college tuition payment.
When Chrysler opened up the order books for the hot new car December 3 for the limited-edition run of 4,500 SRT8s with the 6.1-liter Hemi, the base price was $37,995. Not so fast. Expect to pay as much as $60,000 if you want one in a hurry. This is the same thing that happened a year ago with the Shelby GT 500s. Some Ford dealers were gouging would-be buyers and getting away with it.
One New York Dodge dealer auctioning off a new Challenger saw bids reach $50,000 in three days. We'll keep an eye on this and see what happens. Full production of the 2008 Challenger gets under way late next summer with less-expensive models.
