NoOption - question on your tires

i see you bought the general exclaim UPT. i was wondering how they handle. i don't spin my tires, but i corner hard. is the sidewall as stiff as gatorbacks, or does the sidewall give more and feel squirrelly? do they hold a hard corner or slide? i can get them locally for $105 plus $12 mount and balance. beats the heck out of $160 or more for a goodrich or goodyear at walmart..

If that's what you're looking for I won't recommend them.

Their plus side is:

1) They're very quiet. 2) They make the classic burn-out sound when you spin the tires.

Negative side:

1) They don't track straight very well. They have a tendancy to wander a bit on the highway. 2) They don't corner for shit. They give you a very odd feeling in the turns and don't have a lot of stick. 3) They hydroplane in the rain.

Overall rating: 4 on a scale of 10. The perfect inexpensive tire to abuse/show off with.

I wish I would have bought another set of Firestones.

FWIW, I've got a set of Kumho Ecstas on the Dak and they're wonderful. Great in the rain squalls and still real decent on dry roads.

Well I changed this spring from Kumho Ecstas Supra 712's after about 30K's to Fuzion ZRi's (these are from Bridgestone/Firestone). Price is about the same and I'm finding that the Fuzion's seem quieter and don't follow the ruts in the road like the Kumho's. I did change the tire size from 245/45R17 to 255/45R17 so that might account for some difference. Both are W speed rated. All and all, I'm pleased with the change.

tiresplus has the fuzions for $135 nearby. how do they corner? i thought i read one review on a webpage that they had soft sidewalls. i wonder what air pressure people are running when they complain about that. i learned in 2000 from this group not to run the 30 pounds that ford has in the glove compartment, run toward the higher end of what the tire manufacturer lists. ford did that for the ride, not performance or tire life. i put between 35-40 in them and they wear evenly with 32,000 so far. the higher pressure stiffens the ride but helps the wear and cornering. if you run 30 the outer edges wear fast on a radial.

I changed over a few months ago to Fuzions from some lousy Daytons on my Camaro. Made the vehicle a totally different car. Much quieter, better ride, and corners much better.

I don't know how they compare to high end tires, but they were much better than the Daytons...

I was under the impression that "stickiness" and treadwear are inversely related. Sticky=low treadwear value. Not so sticky= longevity (high treadwear value). Am I wrong?

I too was under that impression til I got these Yokohamas.

They really are great tires and have good grip. Cheaper than BFG KDWS too.

I dunno, when I went in and ordered them from my tire guy, I asked him his impressions, and he said, "When was the last time you bought a high performance Japanese tire that sucked?" They certainly are better than the Comp TAs I had on there.

Check your specs...

The Yoko AVID H4S are "H" rated = 130mph which is WAY too low for a GT Pony or modified V6, and any reputable dealer will tell you that (they probably won't even sell them to you if they know you're putting them on a Mustang so they don't get sued WHEN they blow up). The AVID V4S are the "V" rated model = 149mph but they aren't made in the stock GT size of 245-45-17 (2004) so you'll have to get alternate sizing. I went through all this when I looked at them last year and found it out. I opted to go for the Kumho Ecsta ASX from a local dealer who had them in stock and comparably priced to Tirerack. They are "W" rated = 168mph with a 420 tread/30K miles. Tirerack has them cheaper than the Yokos but I won't deal with them after getting screwed on another set of tires (hint: if your tires aren't worn exactly evenly across the whole tread of the tire then Tirerack will absolutely REJECT any claim, and since NO car wears tires exactly evenly, because cars have to make turns, you're automatically SOL). Buying locally, I get free balance and rotations for life and for a few extra bucks per tire I got full replacement coverage for damage, regardless of treadware (TR can't match that!).

I've had them for a year now and the Kumho's are running fine. Good grip, low noise, and little wear. I can spin them if I want to but as soon as I let off the gas they quickly snag the road and off I go!!!

High speed rated tires are generally made from a harder rubber, and generally not as sticky as "lesser" tires. The get the speed rating by handeling the heat and rotational forces involved in those speeds. Not by being sticky enough to handle and on ramp at 150mph.

If you really drive the car hard you're better off with a lower rated tire, it will corner better.
