Parking brake light (JS?)

98 Mustang GT

When you pull on the parking brake to engage it... the parking brake light is supposed to come on. Well, mine doesn't go off. I believe JS said it was a parking brake module or something... does anybody have any idea? And if it is a module, any idea where it's located? Thanks in advance.

Only two things cause the brake light to come on... a catastrophic braking failure (I say catastrophic because I've never had this happen to me on some pretty shady systems in my older cars... perhaps the SN-95s have more sensors) and the parking brake switch. If your switch is not adjusted correctly, then this will happen. This is most likely the cause. I'm not aware of any "module" as such.

The switch lives at the base of the parking brake lever. You'll have to remove the console to get at it (more of a chore in these cars than in the previous years). You'll see the gear of the brake lever, and near the top should be a little flat tang that sticks out to make contact with the switch.

Try moving the lever around a bit to see if you can get it to go off. If that's the case, it's almost definately that switch not being lined up correctly. They tend to get old and wear out... good luck.

Well... I can "lightly" beat the shit out of the handle & it flickers on & off... I guess that's a good sign that the problem is in fact the latter. Thanks, JS. I'll remove the console today. I really appreciate ya =).

Not a problem. Glad to be of some sort of assistance. Good luck with that console removal. I haven't tried it on an SN-95.

Let me know how it goes. I might wish to do it in my Cobra for some rewiring duties.

JS,

It is piss easy to be blunt. Took me about 15 minutes to remove the console, fix the problem (plug was.... disconnected.. and what appears as a bad ground), and put the console back. It is extremely easy to do. But yeah.... it solved the problem. Thanks a ton =).

Sure thing. Not that I was really afraid, it's just hard to say a job's easy or difficult if I've never done it.

Glad to hear everything was wonderful and all is well again.

Isn't that where you use a velvet hammer?

Nono, that's just softly beating the shit out of something.

Lightly beating the shit out of it requires using one of those little plastic hammers that they sell with toys... ya know, the ones that kids use to put the square peg in the round hole.
