Towing a trailer

Hi, I 'm thinking of getting a 16' Hobie cat and trailer. Would this be a problem towing with my 5.0 5speed?. I estimate the max weight of the trailer and cat @ 500lbs, with 2 ppl in the car. towing distance no more that 10 miles. I plan to use a bolt on class1 hitch. thx

As long as it's a short distance at a slow speed, I don't see that it would be a problem. Of course, getting up the ramp may be a different story.

Yeah, a wet ramp with wide tires could be trouble. Also if the trailer tongue isn't long enough and the ramp has a shallow slope you may have to back your mustang into the water to float your boat.

That's what Pick up trucks are for not Stangs.

Well, it *is* a Hobie Cat. If the ramp angle is /that/ shallow or the ramp is just too slick, two people could easily pick the Cat up off the trailer and *carry* it to the water. :)

Personally, I don't think Nigel will have any problems towing that light of a load with his 5.0, especially for only 10 miles each way. More than enough power, and well within the towing capacity of his car.

Heck, I could even tow my 14' Glastron with my V6stang if I really had to (which may be the case, if my parents ever sell the minivan). My Glastron is within the towing limits at under 1000 pounds loaded, and my V6stang has more horsepower and torque than the minivan (don't laugh!), so I know it'll be able pull the boat at least as far as the crappy ramp (within sight of my house), and probably all the way to the good ramp (~5 miles away). My only concern would be the transmission...

Well, I've rambled enough for one night. :) Good luck with towing the Cat, Nigel!

When considering towing a trailer most people's concerns are power and traction. These are important issues but don't forget the BRAKES! nuff said, been there, done that.
