Will Chrysler Go After Ford's Mustang?

"Last year, GM abondoned the pony car market. After years of successfully selling Camaros and Firebirds, it put both cars on hiatus in favor of the SSR. Ford is currently tooling up for a new version of the Mustang, but it seems there is a large hole in that particular market that could be filled with a Chrysler product. Any plans to do so?"

Dr. Dieter Zetsche (President and CEO of Chrysler) "When I told you that we'd be launching 25 cars over the next 36 months, there will be one vehicle that will very closely approach the four-seat sports car segment."

"Bringing back the Charger R/T perhaps?"

Zetsche: "Could be. But, while leveraging a company's legacy has a lot of merits, it's easy to go too far." Simply building a replica of a former product is not a successful strategy for the future of a car company."

Thoughts?

Let's hope they do better 'leveraging the company's legacy' than the Pontiac GTO.

From what I've read in the January mags, the GTO is one nice ride. Sure, there are things here and there that could be improved, but for the money it's a great package.

So far, DC hasn't come up with anything more than concepts to compete with the GTO or the Mustang, but OTOH Ford and GM don't have too much in the forseeable production future except the new Mustang and the GTO (of course, we're not talking about the GT, Corvette, or the Viper).

I've seen lots of concepts and prototypes from everybody, but where's the beef?

BTW, the GTO is supposed to see three years of production and that's it. After that, who knows?

Joe, the Chrysler chief says they have a four-seat "sports car coming. Be patient.

The GTO is only going to be in this body and on this chassis for a few years. An all-new GTO is promised to follow.

Bah. Where's the beef? Frankly, I'm getting tired of all these P.R. spins. To all makers: Put your money where your mouths are and get some product out to us consumers. And I'm not talking about a teaser car with a production run of 2000. I want to see new pony/muscle cars as plentiful as Mustang GTs.

We'll see.
