'89 pathfinder won't start

has v6, was running fine, then after sitting for a couple of weeks, won't start, engine turns over, after several attempts to start could smell a slight gas odor, so i figured it wasn't getting spark, checked spark between coil wire and distributor and that was good, but doesn't seem to be getting spark to the plugs, pulled cap and checked for cracks, cleaned off carbon tracks and cleaned up the tips a little, put it back, still won't start, wires are in good shape, so i pulled plugs, some were wet with gas, dried them out, still nothing. if i'm getting spark to the cap does this mean the ignition module in the distibutor is ok? while cranking the engine it puffs or "coughs" from the intake, and the engine seems to"bind" a little at times.could it have jumped time, and would this cause it not to send spark to the plugs at the right time. or could it be as simple as a new cap.I know a new cap is not expensive, just don't want to replace anything it doesn't need. was going to put it up for sale when this happened, just want to get it running so i can sell it. has 180,000 miles, 5 speed, 4 wheel drive, two door. thanks, mark

From your description of puffing out the intake and binding, one thing to suspect is cross firing. When was the last time you replaced the secondary wiring? How do you know the wires are in good shape? I'd put a cap and a set of wires on it just to be sure it didn't jump time.

i havn't had this vehicle very long so i don't know the history of it, the plug wires look new,no grease or dirt on them at all, the're blue nkg or ngk or whatever. could the cap be causing the crossfiring? I cleaned the contacts again with some emery cloth and it started and ran smooth for a minute, then started missing and died,so i guess its the cap,and it didn't sound like it had jumped time,no clanking or knocking. the spark plugs look like they've been in there for a while, so i think a new cap, rotor and plugs are in order. it has nippondensos, should i go back with those? also the cap is not a japanese part, she might be mad about that. thanks, mark

Replace the cap. Also wires can look new and be bad. I had a vehicle that I bought new and kept the engine very clean. The plug wires were shot after 40K miles.
