Engine block coolant capacity?

Nov 23, 2003 3 Replies

How much coolant does a 4 cyl 2.0 engine hold? I have a 99 altima, going to be flushing the coolant tomorrow and opening the engine block nut seems to be a pain in the butt. Is it really that important? The total capacity is 2 gallons.

It's more of a pain in the ass to change that fluid. I recommend just draining/flush the rad and reservoir. Most of the fuild is there (I think it's 5 gallons on my Max) so you'll change most of the coolant (70% on mine). I think 70% new coolant is reasonable, especially if changing it all means I have to triple the workload.

Drain the radiator. Measure the volume of fluid that came out. Your owners manual specifies how much coolant goes in total. The difference is what is left in the engine block.

Don't be that anal, it's not worth the effort. Drain the radiator & overflow, make about a 50/50 mix of coolant and DISTILLED water and you're done.
