Infinity G20 misfire

I have a 1991 G20 which has a very intermittent misfire. It starts and idles normallyl until the engine warms up to normal running temperature. Then an occasional miss will occur. The miss will become more dramatic when the vehicle is put into reverse or run. When the car is in motion the missfire will occur while the engine is under load at low RPM. Once the engine gets abve 1500 RPM the car accellerates smoothly and drives without any further signs of trouble.



I have replaced the coil, O2 sensor, leads and spark plugs and the symptoms stubbonly persist. The 'check engine light' does not show up once the engine is running. Can anyone give some suggestions.


If you didn't use factory OEM ignition parts i.e , distributor cap, rotor and wires you may want to do that first.

Nissan's are very finicky about ignition parts, they don't like anything but OEM replacements

Jack, It is important the "check engine light" comes on when the ignition is turned on to ensure the indicator light is functioning. After the engine starts then the light will go off if the ECU does not detect an error. In the event the CHL stays off then the ECU is telling me it has not detected an error in the air flow meter, the engine temp. sensor, vehicle speed sensor, exhaust gas sensor, detonation sensor and the throttle sensor circuits, thus eliminating a number of possible causes for my symptoms. 1991 G20 is not as sophisticated as today's OBDII computers. I believe that the G20 unit will only detect open or short circuit problems rather than detect an out of range function. I'm hoping there is an ECU geek out there who can give me more instruction in regards to this. Meanwhile, I'm off to Infinity to get some new HT leads. The ones I have are not OEM and I have already 'fixed?' two independent misfire problems by changing out leads. With this third time experience I was begining to conclude that all these misfire occurances were from another source of failure but the OEM question may be the answer. Malcolm
