Ping Nisstech: QUest Speedo, Phase Two

Nisstech:

I am trying to remove the speed sensor from my '93 Quest tranny to perform the factory manual tests. I removed the 10mm bolt and the "C" clip/bracket but it is still in there tight. Does it just pull straight out ? Or in there some twist and pull trick or other fastener that I need to remove to get it out ? I got it to wiggle a little, but it's still in there tight - I really don't want to snap it off it there's something still holding it in.

(I tried the "bang on the dash hard" the last few times it dropped to zero but it didn't have any effect at all. I also checked and cleaned all the connections and everything seems to check out. So, I'm thinking it's the sensor. It's still intermittent, your opinion is welcome).

Thanks,

Bob

I like the fact that you are doing tests Bob, but I got to tell you that the speed sensor in the transmission is most likely not the problem. Those speed sensors almost never go bad.

the speed sensor in the transmission is a very tight fit, it will come out but you have got to work at it.

My feeling is that the problem is within the speed-o head itself, is was a common thing on the older model Quests, there is a little electric motor inside the speed-o head that over time just gives up the ghost, and BTW the motor is not sold separately, you need to get the whole speed-o head assembly

OK.

OK.

Thanks. I expect that you're right then. I really gave it a lot of slam tests over the past week and I couldn't get it to pop back up so I was leaning towards the sensor. I did clean all the connections from one end to the other but none of it really looked bad so I don't think that was the problem. If the damn thing would just die I would be able to pinpoint the problem easily :-)

Thanks again, Bob
