92 Stanza timing chain failure.

I had a 92 Stanza with 105,000 miles on it. Well maintained etc. I went to start it and it felt like the battery was dying. After a third attempt at starting, the engine ran free as though there was no compression, which turned out to be the case as the valves were bent. I was told by 2 independent mechanics that timing chain tensioner failure was probably the cause of the failure. The chain did not break. Since there is nothing in the recommended maintenance that suggested that the timing chain needed any service or replacement, this failure came as a shock to me, especially at such a low mileage. Can anyone comment on this case. Is this unusual, and what should/could I have have done to prevent it. Thanks
