1999 GLE Front Strut Replacement

I'm getting the urge to replace the original front struts on my 99 GLE with

82,700 miles. I just replaced some terrible Yokohama Avid V4 tires with Goodyear Assurance ComforTred tires. I tolerated the Yokos for less than 32,000 miles. These tires were so rough and loud that I kept thinking that a door was ajar, or a window was open.

The Goodyears are very quiet and smooth. However, the front end still seem to bounce, float, and make a weird popping noise going over small bumps at low speed. I suspect the struts although it could be other suspension parts, bearings, etc.

I'm thinking of keeping the stock springs and putting in better quality, perhaps adjustable struts. On maxima.org, quite a few posters report good results with Tokico Illumina struts. I'm not too concerned with price, and I probably could do without the adjustable struts. Suggestions?

The Illuminas are nice. OEM replacements from Nissan would also be a good choice.

Any estimates of the cost of strut replacement? I have a '99 SE in need of new struts.

Your current shocking remnants flap in the wind... tank full of scary kangaroo gas... anything new is a winner. All 4.

For what purpose u have the std (?) max? Purpose defines the shock selection; no tow no racing - cannot see any gains in adj shocks, only add complicacy [what isnt there, cannot go kaputt].

Anywhere from $75 to $300 per strut plus about an hour's labor per side. An alignment would be wise as well.

Nope, no towing, no racing, no kangaroos. I want a comfortable, smooth, quiet ride. I want to keep the factory springs and replace just the struts. However, I occasionally enjoy spirited driving, sometimes involving higher speeds.

...occasionally enjoy spirited driving, sometimes involving higher speeds....

- alas, socialists greenpees will criminalize that enjoyment :( Do we really love the hitech? ...cameras, automated cumulative ticketing?

- racing is more enjoyable if chassis feels tight. I suggest buyin/installin the front swaybar. Gives lots more speed in curves as chassis is rigid; minimal comfort loss. I test built my 2$ swaybar, and was positively surprised.

- I think u cannot find the difference with new springs (if not smting lots better than stock)

FYI Tokico's are OEM equipment on most Nissan's

Chances are thee is nothing wrong with the struts you have, your best bet is to go with OEM parts

Shock moves up/down on each foot traveled (even when wind blows on parked car:). At 82?700 miles, this means that shocks (each one) has moved... 82?700 X

5,280 = 436,656,000times up&down. (This travel is mostly concentrated on a very narrow 'area'.)

Without diamond layering, no material stands without wearing out.

The mentioned wear is REAL, sits there. Most ppl dont notice how car degrades mile by mile, eventually starts to sail on the hiway, braking distance grows, emergency situations grow real dangero gangaross...

(Cannot Fathom this kilometer assumption: 1 miles (statute) is equal to 5,280.00 feet.)

Lots ppl have a bumpersticker: "I'd rather be sailing". Sure, all the time...

NissTech,

The front tires seem to make a popping sound similar to that made by a bouncing basket ball. Our '95 Max GXE did not make these kinds of noises. This is why I suspect the struts. I've checked the tire pressure myself several times since getting the new tires two weeks ago.

How easy is it to diagnose front suspension issues. I image that a worn bushing or bearing here or there is hard to find. The tire balance is good, as is the alignment. I'm hesitant to take the car to the dealer.

The upper strut mounts will exhibit your symptoms if they fail, and its one thing that you can check without any tools. Open the hood; position yourself by one of the wheel wells where you can see the big bolt in the center of the strut mount (in the top of the strut tower); bounce that corner of the car while watching the center bolt in the strut mount. If it moves independently, the mount has failed.

The good news is that the part only costs about $35 at NAPA. The bad news is that you have to remove the strut from the car and disassemble it to replace the mount.

The mileage tells that shocks are worn. Browse shock pages: your braking distance has increased 10-30feet, in tight situation car IS wobbly = dangerous.

If you do not believe, find a place to test. Youll find out that only 30% is left... After test, u can rest.

We are lucky, arent we here: yearly inspection picks these sailing timebombs off the road.

Then Swap.
