'95 cold start noise & freeze up

1995 GXE had the infamous cold start noise from the beginning -- dealer (Sweeney, Cincinnati) tried 4 times to fix and failed, ended up calling it normal noise. Moved to warmer climate - rarely heard it. Didn't start it for about a month during home remodel. Turned over for couple seconds, then only heard an odd sound like the starter trying to turn it over. Towed to local mechanic (non dealer). He dissasembled the head and inspected, didn't see wear on the timing chain or tensioners, put it back together and it started OK. $437 bill. Still get the noise. But noise is more like a high rpm, slightly grinding starter noise, whereas early sounds were more gurgly (actually thought it was valves initially in 1995).

FYI to all. Appreciate any sharing of similar experiences - especially possible fixes.

Not fixing this will eventually ruin the starter, but no big deal. But it could also damage the flywheel, and that's really expensive to replace.

website.> All 4th gen maxes have this issue (I do) but the work to lube the starterseems more of a bother> then the actual noise.>
