95 Ranger Drivetrain Noise & Vibration

1995 Ranger XLT Supercab 2WD
60K miles
2.3 L, 5-speed Man.

Here’s a problem that I’ll no doubt wish I would have dealt with a couple months back. I first noticed a gear-mesh type whirr in the rear end. The noise then morphed into a cyclic wha-wha-wha, dependent on the speed of the vehicle (completely independent of transmission gear selection; noise is heard even while coasting). Now the latest problem is an excessive, vehicle vibration above 35mph, making highway driving all but impossible.... I know truck is destined for major repairs, but I’d like to be a little educated before I start seeking out repair shops.... Is it likely I have more than one problem causing these symptoms? Any suggestions?



As an aside, until now the Ranger has been a problem-free truck. Its too bad that Ford doesn’t sell the Supercab 2WD with the 4-cyl anymore, I’d like to buy anther one. For my needs, I’d prefer the extra fuel economy over the pushrod V6.

In case someone else needs the info, I’m posting this follow-up to my post.

The problem was the worn-out center bearing on the two-piece driveshaft. I also had the u-joints replaced, even though the mechanic guy who did it told me they were still okay. Total cost: $60 for the parts at Advance Auto Parts, and $30 for the labor to have the driveshaft rebuilt (my local mechanic only charged me for half-hour of labor!)

BTW, I took the driveshaft off myself, which was difficult since the

12mm bolts on the differential flange were pretty rusted. I used a can of PB lubricant, a box-end wrench and a 5lb fist maul to break ’em loose. Other than that, job was was a piece of cake.

Also, I found out the link for the Ranger Fleet models that will be available to 2006. And they list a 4 cyl. Supercab! Its about time they bring this configuration back. Hopefully this means the consumer models will be the same. Maybe I’ll be Ranger shopping soon!
