Fuel efficienct and speed

A while ago I got a miserable phone call early in the morning, my father was dying.

I raced from Ottawa to Kingston Ontario, normal trip time is around 2 hours and 10 minutes, that morning it was 1 hour and 15 minutes. My average speed was in excess of the limit of course, 180 KMH, there were no transports on the road, a Sunday morning and very few cars and no police ( I don't own a radar detector and it would have been of little use).

Two things I noticed;

  1. I got another 80KM out of the gas tank, more than usual, so was my fuel consumption better at the higher RPM's?

  1. The Cruise control doesn't work past 168 KMH, is that typical?

Yes, I am glad I did go that fast so that I was able to be there.

You probably didn't stop as often as you usually would on such a trip. That would account for better gas consumption. All things considered, it should get slightly worse mileage at those speeds than at more normal cruising speed (120 KMH) but not enough that you would notice. Your car must have relatively low wind resistance.

Intentional. It has a low speed cut off to prevent people from using it in school zones and a high speed cut off because there is just no way your responses would be fast enough if you were using cruise at high speeds.
